Hans von Stiegel

Hans is an accountant and former banker. He worked for Citibank and Manufacturers Hannover in London and New York where he focused on risk management and management information systems. He designed and implemented credit control systems, industry specific cash flow and valuation models and standardized methodologies across the corporate banking groups. Prior to his banking career, he was Financial Controller for several medium sized automotive supply companies, where he was responsible for the entire range of accounting, taxation and finance functions.

Hans has an MBA from London Business School and a B.S. from Andrews University. He serves on several boards and finance committees, and is President of the Wopila Charitable Foundation, a private foundation focused on education and economic empowerment. Born in Detroit, he is a citizen of the Unites States and the United Kingdom.

Jenny Fletcher
Chief Executive Officer, Kenya

Jenny has over 20 years’ experience in the power sector and international finance. She spearheaded the development to financial close of the first utility scale wind farm in East Africa and has developed and implemented a number of projects in the energy sector including solar, wind and gas. Jenny was nominated as “Outstanding Woman in Power” in East Africa in 2015 and was also named as one of the top 60 most influential figures in East and West African power in 2014.

Previous experience includes managing budgets of over $200m across 30 countries based out of New York. As a Director in Ethiopia and as the Country representative of IRC in Kenya, she successfully oversaw the design and delivery of many development projects some of which included large scale town water distribution systems and the design and roll out of health delivery systems in the areas of primary healthcare, water and sanitation and HIV/AIDS.

Born in Kenya, educated in Australia and the UK, Jenny is a chartered accountant and has an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She currently resides in Nairobi, Kenya, and has lived and worked in numerous developed and emerging markets, including Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, the USA and the UK.

Kofi Owusu Bempah
General Counsel, London

Kofi is the General Counsel for Ariya Capital. Over the last 10 years he has gained significant transactional experience covering a number of countries in Africa, Europe and the Middle East in project finance, energy and infrastructure, oil and gas related deals and international banking transactions. Kofi has closed over 1 GW of renewable energy projects worldwide.

Previously, in private practice he advised governments, public sector entities, sponsors, developers, commercial lenders and DFI’s in connection with major projects worldwide. Kofi trained as a solicitor at magic circle firm Linklaters LLP in London before moving after 5 years to US firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe where he was a Managing Associate until joining Ariya. Kofi is Ghanaian and studied law at the University of London (Kings College), City University, London and the College of Law, London.

Herta von Stiegel
Founder & Executive Chair London & Kenya

Herta established Ariya Capital in 2008 to focus on Africa as the next major opportunity for sustainable venture and private equity investments. She has 25 years of experience in international finance with a consistent track record of building profitable highly regulated structured finance businesses and has led/ executed debt and equity transactions in excess of $10 billion. She was Managing Director at AIG Financial Products, where she built a successful European structured finance division, and has also held senior positions at Citibank and JP Morgan in London and New York. She has specific expertise in finance, clean and renewable energy and risk management.

A tax lawyer by training, she serves on several corporate and non-profit boards, including as a member of the Supervisory Board of LeasePlan Corporation N.V., the leading global fleet management company with activities in 32 countries. From 2006 to 2012, she served on the board of Camco International, a publicly listed global clean energy developer with significant operations in China, the US and Africa, where she chaired the audit committee and served on the remuneration and nominations committees.

Herta holds a Juris Doctor degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Michigan, a Masters of Law degree in Taxation from New York University School of Law, a B.A. and Doctorate of Humane Letters (honoris causa) from Andrews University and completed the Executive Programme in Corporate Finance at the London Business School. Born and raised in emerging markets, Herta has committed this phase of her career to developing the power sector in Africa as a key engine for growth and poverty alleviation.

Javier Sanchez Robledo
Finance Director, Kenya

Javier has over 20 years of financial control and performance analysis experience, mainly in Europe and Africa within the engineering, leasing, IT and consulting environments, whilst working for multi-national and multi-site companies. Before he joined Ariya, he was the Africa Financial Controller for Indra Sistemas in charge of the financial control and monitoring of Indra’s many African subsidiaries directly reporting to Africa´s Geographic Director. Javier has managed the Indra Technology South Africa start up process following BEE regulations and has in depth experience in corporate finance and has lead mergers, acquisitions and restructuring teams covering transaction worth $470m.

Javier has a BA in Economics from the UNIVERSIDAD COMPLUTENSE DE MADRID, Spain. Born in Spain, Javier has lived in various African countries and resides with his family in Nairobi, Kenya.

Michael Farrow

Michael is a founding director of Consortia Partnership Limited, a Jersey licensed trust company. He is also a director of a number of UK listed companies, involved in real estate and carbon emissions, and a variety of substantial, private equity and collective investment schemes.

For seven years previous to this he was an Executive Director and trustee of a large and complex family structure. He held, as such, over thirty directorships of subsidiary and associated companies in a number of jurisdictions. He managed the family office, which acted as the head office to the international property group, providing all reporting and compliance as well as controlling a substantial treasury operation, listed investments and venture capital projects. He has also been group company secretary of Cater Allen Jersey, a banking, trustee and investment management group.

Michael was formerly an Army Officer and holds an MSc in Corporate Governance and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries & Administrators.

Dr. Bernd Schanzenbacher

Bernd is an agronomist and an acknowledged leader in sustainability and socially responsible investments with over 20 years of experience in financial markets, business practices, and international public policy. Prior to EBG Capital, Bernd was Global Co-Head of Credit Suisse’s Environmental Business Group where he led implementation of the overall strategy and execution of the Environmental Business Group’s cleantech and natural resource investment strategies. Bernd played a key role securing Credit Suisse’s mandate for the Masdar Clean Tech Fund with Abu Dhabi and Siemens.

Until 2007, Bernd was Credit Suisse’s Global Head of Sustainability Affairs. He contributed as a Lead Author to the Chapter on “Impacts of Climate Change on Financial Services” of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Third Assessment Report. IPCC won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Prior to joining Credit Suisse Group in 1998, Bernd was the Economic Affairs Officer with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi, Kenya and in Geneva, Switzerland. Bernd holds a Master in Agronomy (Dipl-ing. agr.) and a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of Hohenheim in Germany.

Paolo is currently managing partner of Netplan Management Consulting, LLC in New Jersey, USA (an advisory specialized in company turnaround and strategic repositioning), a Board member of Iren (a $3.5B market cap utility), and of SMRE (a small cap machinery and e-mobility solution provider). Paolo teaches leadership at Executive MBA, Alma Graduate School of Universita’ di Bologna, a program he has led for 4 years as scientific director.

Paolo was formerly CEO of Enel Green Power, Executive Chairman of 9REN Group (renewables), Chairman of Atmos Holding (an Italian clean tech Venture Capital firm), Executive Chairman of Solopower (semiconductors and photovoltaics, Silicon Valley, California), Chairman of Element Power Solar (power developer, Oregon), Chairman of Solar Energy Italia and CEO of Nuovi Cantieri Apuania (shipbuilding). 17 - 19th May 2016: Jenny Fletcher was on a panel and spoke at the African Utility Week (http://www.african-utility-week.com) in Cape Town, South Africa. The panel topic was Reforming Africa’s Electricity Markets with Jenny's panel specifically discussing the question: Is a wholesale competitive electricity market the answer to Africa’s electrification challenge? She also gave a presentation that addressed the question "Is it time for distributed power? How can utilities make this new technology work for them?”. The question discussed during the panel discussion thereafter was entitled “Is the rise of customer-owned solar systems, gas-powered generators, micro-hydra and pump storage installations a threat or opportunity for utilities?” January 2016:Ariya Capital amongst four Kenyan Firms picked for Sh 1.3bn green energy fun.
